Meet Author Laurence Perry

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother, Author Laurence Perry to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-). Are you ready?

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?Author Laurence Perry

LP: I was incarcerated at a young age for something i did not do. Though I wasn’t a saint my young mind was blown. I could not understand how this could happen. I started asking my self questions about the system that allowed this to happen and even myself for my part. I was a gang member and did all types of things to assist the downfall of my community. A community that had a surplus of liquor stores crack and churches. My search for answers set me on a course that led to a rigorous self education process. During this process, I’ve learned truths that further blew my mind. I eventually developed a voice a voice and a story. I wanted to share. Richard wrights classic “Native Son” and it’s profound impact on me with its unapologetic presentation of black reality hit me with an ah ha moment. I had a platform. I wanted to be an author.

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

LP: Nduguvoice. Ndugu is the swahili word for brotherhood. As used by nduguvoice a brotherhood of humanity neither gender nor nationality specific.

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

LP: I’m a black man who comes from the pockets of poverty we call the hood. Urban is my reality. However, I have no desire to be boxed. My literature of preference is literature that is reality based. I love the literature of the Harlem renaissance era. In my writing, I present present day reality in a non hyperbolic and responsible manner.

Slyce: Have you penned under another name?

LP: No

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “Pivotal Paths”. What was this book about?

LP: “Pivotal Paths” is a book about the pressures that our youth face outside the home from community and piers and how these pressures usher them to a crossroads that depending on their decisions (actions have consequences) will determine the path they take. For better or worse. I aim to educate the youth and their parents. Single moms in particular. Mothers often unfairly shoulder an unfair amount of blame for how their children turn out. They are often more hard on themselves than the often hypocritical society is. I’d like to give them a more wide and subsequently appropriate view.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

LP: It’s part of a series. The second installment will be out later this year.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

LP: I think interviews are very important. They provide authors an opportunity to clarify their message and introduce themselves to the people.

Slyce: How important are reviews?

LP: Reviews are very important as well as they help push the book through word of mouth. Invaluable for promotion.

Slyce: What does the term, “Building a Brand” mean?

LP: Building a brand is the developing of one’s personal and business profile.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

LP: Enhance my knowledge in all things integral to the the writing and subsequent publishing process. By creating a literary product that is true to the culture and responsible in its presentation. By not exaggerating or glorifying the aspects of the culture in a way that will prove overwhelming harmful.

Slyce: What goals would you like to achieve as an author?

LP: To have my voice and story to be well received with their true intent appropriately conveyed and comprehended. Of course I hope for financial success. The more success the further the reach. Most importantly, I hope I am able to precipitate a call to action and substantial change. Save our children.

Slyce: What advice would you like to share with aspiring authors?

LP: Work hard. Don’t listen to the naysayers and be true to yourself. Follow your dream.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Laurence Perry?

LP: Yes as I stated above, “Pivotal Paths” volume 2 will be out later this year and another novel entitled, “Diography of a soulmate” will follow shortly there after. Non- fiction works are in process as well.

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?
