Meet Author Will Brown

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother Will Brown to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-).  Are you ready?

WB: Marilyn, I would like to say thank you so much for this opportunity to speak with you and to have me featured in your Interrogation Room.

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?

WB: I used to be in the music industry as a singer, songwriter and musician. From there, I transitioned over to the airline industry working with females when I started writing for the first time. To be honest, it actually started out doodling but the more I created the story the more interesting the story became. So, I used my female colleagues as a catalyst to experience how well my story line was written so they really encouraged me as they became more interested in my story to continue to write.

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

WB: I’m working with a very good publisher. Her name is Kim M. Stephens. She is the CEO of Blacq Rayne Publications.

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

WB: My genre right now is Urban fiction however, I do want to reach a broader audience because of the story line that my books have to offer. They’re just not limited to the urban community. I believe that there’s a message for everyone regardless of ethnicity.

Slyce: You wrote a book title, “I’ve Got So Much To Give”. What was this book about?

WB: “I’ve Got So Much To Give” represents 4 individuals- T-Bird,Trey, JJ and Q. They have a friendship that is unbreakable. They are movers, shakers and CEOs of their businesses including a private Corporate Jet Service, a Cellular Phone Company, an Entertainment and Sports Attorney and owner of one of the most popular clubs in the metropolitan areas and finally a singer-songwriter dominating the Billboard charts. They keep their financial network streaming among their business that makes them moguls in their own rights. They give back to their communities including foundations. However, there personal lives are in complete chaos. These four individuals will entrap you emotionally with their demise which is pretty much like life circumstances that we all at some point go through.

Slyce: Is this book a series or a standalone?

WB: This is a series. The first book is entitled “I’ve Got So Much To Give” followed by, “I Surrender” followed by, “My Cup Runs Over” and by popular demand from my readers, I’m currently completing the final series entitled “I Blame You”.

Slyce: In what city does this story take place?

WB: Newark New Jersey

Slyce: How important are interviews?

WB: I think interviews are very important. They give you the opportunity to introduce yourself, your background and your work as an author.

Slyce: What goals do you wish to achieve as an author?

WB: My desires as an author is to complete the publication of my remaining 6 of 14 books I’ve written. With that being said, I’m currently working to have the Give series and I Surrender series go to playwright or film and I’m on that journey right now even as we speak.

Slyce: Have you done blog talk radio?

WB: Yes I’ve actually done 3 blog radio interviews. I think it’s a great platform to get your readers who have supported you to listen. Also, it allows them the experience and engagement so that everyone who’s interested in your book or listening about the book can really create an interest because of the emotional impact your supporters are elaborating on or because of their experience with you as an author.

Slyce: Have you done book signings?

WB: Yes I’ve done 5 book signings- 4 in Atlanta GA and 1 in Newark, NJ.

Slyce: Name three authors you’d love to work with

WB: Zane, Omar and Nathan McCall

Slyce: Do you feel a new author should have a “Team”?

WB: Yes, having a team is very important. You need someone for publication, photos, editing, and for your social media, marketing, and networking. You need to be able to come together to critique the vision.

Slyce: What advice can you offer to those aspiring to become an author?

WB: I’ve been asked this question before and what I recommend is to test your writing skills. Write an experience that you encounter, be detailed about the experience and the individuals involved, share it with some friends and if they think it makes sense, then write another story. Make sure that the story comes from the heart and that you believe in it. If you don’t have any experience in writing, go to the library and do some research on how to write a book. This will give you a good platform and you’ll be able to come up with some really great ideas.

Slyce: What was one of the biggest mistakes you made as a new author?

WB: My biggest mistake was going after promotional offers from publication companies. You may receive offers online for publication for as low as $500. They will offer some different packages from Platinum to Silver and in those packages will be the price ranges included. However, you have to do your homework because there are some mom-and-pop publications out there, who do not have integrity and unfortunately, it can be your worst nightmare. I have to be honest to say that I did go through that experience and it was total misery after investing in the best package that they had to offer, $2,200. However, meeting Kim was my saving grace.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Will Brown?

WB: Lol ….Interesting enough that you would ask. I’m trying to control the flame. It’s a little high right now and I’m trying not to blow the lab up. I am totally on a mission to see my books go to screen write and even networking and doing everything possible to see that come into fruition. I have a musician friend who asked me a question regarding my songwriting skills. He asked, “do you believe in your work enough that you would die for it” and I answered, “yes”. He said, “If that’s your answer then nothing will stop you.” So I’ve written hit songs and now shifting to a new level in my writing.

Slyce: What does the term “Building a Brand” mean?

WB: It’s you and your work, your vision, what you prevent to the market place. It’s your standard of excellence. It’s your vision for all to see, identify, support and experience.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

will brown trademark imageWB: Well I’m currently maintaining my social media connections and sites. Also, I’m joining book clubs and creating my own website for my foundation. I’m also getting a patent on my trademark which represents my brand.

Slyce: What does the phrase “Learn the Craft” mean?

WB: I remember Steve Harvey saying, “to be be successful, you have to do 6 times more than the person who already made it”. TD Jakes once said, it’s a fool who doesn’t invest in himself. It’s the time you put into learning, being around other writers who pull out the best in you. It’s the representation of your work. The finesse in your writing style. It’s the beauty, your soundboard of excellence that you’ve devoted to your work.
