Meet Author Thalia Lake

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our Sistah Thalia Lake to “The Interrogation tlake photoRoom/IUrban” !! Welcome my Sistah 🙂 You ready?…What is the name of your publihing company?

TL: Jessica Watkins Presents.

Slyce: Have you ever penned under another name?

TL: No.

Slyce: You’ve written a book enttiled, “Pain Lived, Love Found” – what was this book about?

TL: It’s the story of many that’s rarely talked about. It’s the story of Sloane Paris and how she and her siblings grew up in dysfunction, a completely abusive household at the hands of BOTH of her parents, and how that abuse affected Sloane and her siblings into adulthood. Sloane buries herself in her career and ignores her pain, keeps it bottled up until love comes along and changes everything. Love gives her the strength to let go of the pain and embrace the love she’s found.

Slyce: Is your bok an e-book and/or a paperback?

TL: Yes, both.

Slyce: Where can our viewers purchase your book?

TL: Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Slyce: What does the phrase “learn the craft” mean?

TL: I think most writers have a natural talent, but you still have to be a student of your craft and learn the basics of it and keep learning. No matter how seasoned of a writer you are, there is always room to improve and learn more.

Slyce: What subjects do you touch on in your book?

TL: Abuse – sexual, mental, and physical. The importance of seeking help/therapy and that it’s never to late to do so. Love, forgiveness, family, and faith are also touched on throughout.

Slyce: What does the term “making a brand”  mean?

TL: To me, making a brand is putting together what you feel represents you in the most honest and accurate way. It’s what you’ve put your time, sweat and tears into and you want to present it to the world as something that is professional, viable, and worth looking into and buying.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

TL: First and foremost I strive to put out quality work. That is very important to me. I want to be the kind of author whose work gets better and better with each book that I write. Secondly, I make it a point to interact with my readers and fans and make sure that I am accessible to them to ask questions, learn what kind of stories they like and don’t like, and to hear what they liked or didn’t like about my work.

Slyce: How important are reviews?

TL: Reviews, specifically honest reviews, are extremely important to me because it lets me know if what I’m writing is connecting with the readers. I know not everything I write will connect with everyone, but reviews help you look at areas that need improvement in your writing.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

TL: I think interviews are very important, and considering that this is my very first one as a new author, I hope to do more! Interviews not only help get your name and work out there, but it gives your readers, and potential new readers, a chance to get to know the author and what motivates them to write, what they like and don’t like, etc. It shows readers that we’re human.

Slyce: In what city does your story take place?

TL: Detroit.

Slyce: What are your thoughts on the .99cent book?

TL: As a reader, I’ve read some really good books that were .99, and on the flip side of that, I’ve read some bad ones. Readers like to feel like they are getting a deal, heck we all like a deal! I just hope authors aren’t selling their work short.

Slyce: If your book had a theme song, what would it be?

TL:  “I’m Ready” by Alicia Keyes.

Slyce: What Authors- past and/or present- had an influence on you?

TL: Margaret Walker, author of the book Jubilee will forever be my all time favorite. My sisters read this book first and then when I was in the 6th grade I finally read it and it blew my mind! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that book over the years, but she’s definitely that one author that changed my life and inspired me in so many ways. She’s a wonderful, prolific, beautiful writer.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Thalia Lake?

TL: Yes, I’m currently writing “Pain Lived, Love Found II: Sarah’s story”. The fans asked for this and I’m listening to them! I hope they love this as much as they loved the first one!

Slyce: What goals do you wish to achieve as an Author?

TL: I would like to branch out in my writing. Right now I’m writing interracial romance novels, which I enjoy. I also want to do a suspenseful novel, and a series of children’s books. My ultimate goal is to see my books on Barnes & Noble, WalMart, Target, and Walgreens bookshelves.

Slyce: What tools do you find most useful in distributing your material?

TL: As a new writer I’m still learning. Making use of promotional businesses have been very helpful to me. I hope this interrogation will also be another avenue for getting my books out there.

Slyce: Have you ever done Blog Talk Radio, Book Signings, and/or Tours?

TL: No, this is my very first.

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or for the profit?

TL: Definitely for the passion. I’ve been writing since the 4th grade and I’ve always written from the heart. Both of my books, Choosey Lovers and Pain Lived, Love Found were from the heart, it’s what I felt passionate about writing and so I wrote those stories. Writing is my creative outlet as well as my passion and it always will be.
