Meet Author Sherabim Joy

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our sistah, Author Sherabim Joy to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my sistah :-). Are you ready?

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?Author Sherabim Joy

SJ: I have been writing since I was a child but never considered publishing a work until I connected with other writers. Their enthusiasm and creativity was contagious so I decided to take the plunge and dive into writing.

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

SJ: I am currently published with After the Storm Publishing an imprint of award winning publishing company Peace in the Storm Publishing

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

SJ: I am a Christian author. My first two publications were non-fiction. “After the Benediction” is my first hand at fiction. I am excited because it has been well received thus far.

Slyce: Have you penned under another name?

SJ: I have penned under both my maiden(Allen) and my former married name(Curvin). To prevent future confusion, since I intend to continue to publish, I now pen under Sherabim Joy which is my first name and middle name. I hope to one day remarry and I don’t want to have to change the names on my book titles again.

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “After The Benediction”. What was this book about?

SJ: The book is about a well renown Evangelist by the name Jacey Joyner. She is loved and admired by as many people who envy her. To the untrained eye, she appears to have it all together; a beautiful family, a thriving ministry, and people to fawn over her. However, after the benediction; she struggles immensely with her own reality, to the point that she is haunted by a suicidal presence. Her refusal to forgive her father, former Bishop Jason Loftin, for his thoughtless and scandalous acts, sows grave seeds of bitterness within her that threaten to destroy her relationship with God, her family, and her ministry. Unable to continue carrying the weighty load of people’s expectations, Jacey is on the verge of simply walking away from it all. However, an ordained encounter with a spiritual eye that is capable of seeing beyond her facade and is unmoved by her title and accomplishments, confronts her with truth, love, and kindness. Will pride keep Jacey from accepting the truth about her spiritual stagnancy? Or will she have an ear to hear the voice of wisdom and instruction that will rekindle her passion for God and for ministering to his people?

Slyce: Name two of the main characters in this book

SJ: Two of the main characters are the heroine Jacey Joyner and her father, Bishop Loftin who she has major issues which that she never resolved.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

SJ: This is an excellent question that I can’t answer yet. I can visualize a follow up book and it evolving into a series but I have not made the decision to do so yet.

Slyce: Is your book an eBook and/or paperback?

SJ: This book may be purchased in paper back or Kindle.

Slyce: How important is research?

SJ: I think research is important depending on the topic that you are writing about. My non-fiction titles are all Bible based so my primary mode of research was the Bible. However, I did reference medical conditions/symptoms in both books so it was vital that I referred to the conditions accurately. Research prevents you from sounding like an imbecile.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

SJ: Interviews are crucial. They are an excellent source for readers to hear the heart of the author. When I’m coaching/training authors I always say “Writing the book is the easy part….marketing and selling the book is the challenging part.” Interviews are a great mode of advertisement.

Slyce: How important are reviews?

SJ Reviews are extremely important. Everybody and their “mama” is publishing these days. Reviews help your masterpiece stand out to potential readers by allowing them to read the testimony of those who have already read your material. Reviews allow potential readers to know that their time and money won’t be wasted by investing in purchasing and reading your work.

Slyce: What does the term, “Building a Brand” mean?

SJ: Building a brand means creating a reputation for yourself and your product offerings. People know that when they read a book by Sherabim Joy they will receive high quality material that will challenge them in their walk with God whether it’s a fiction or nonfiction title.

Slyce: What goals would you like to achieve as an author?

SJ: Honestly, I want to achieve recognition as an award winning author, who sells a lot of book and is profitable. Likewise I am endeavoring to have my book turned into a movie.

Slyce: What advice can you offer those aspiring to become an author?

SJ: I would encourage aspiring authors to do your research. Again writing is the easy part but you need to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of traditional publishing vs. self-publishing. It’s important to understand the amount of work that it takes for your project to be successful after it has been published. Also, build a readership BEFORE you publish your book so that people can get a taste of your skill level, & will be more apt to support you once your work has been released. Lastly take your time if you are self publishing. You can have a great concept but if it’s full of grammatical errors & typographical errors you will lose your credibility.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Sherabim Joy?

SJ: Yes, my second novel “Mema’s Pretty Little Black Girls” will be released in few months along with my first children’s book entitled “Manny and the Magick Keys”

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?

SJ: Definitely for the passion…the profit will come in its own time!

Slyce: Name three authors you’d love to work with.

SJ: Tyler Perry is on the top of my list. Also, Bishop T.D. Jakes and Toni Morrison.

Slyce: Have you done blog talk radio?

SJ: I have not hosted my own show. I have contemplated about it but I have not activated the thought into action. I have interviewed on others shows.
