Meet Author Marlon Mccaulsky

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother, Author Marlon Mccaulsky to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-). Are you ready?

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “If I Was Your Girlfriend”. What was this book about?Author Marlon Mccaulsky

MM: “If I Was Your Girlfriend” is a romantic-drama set in Atlanta, Georgia. The book follows the lives of a group of four women in their mid-twenties who, despite their different natures and ever-changing lives, remain inseparable and confide in each other. Rashida Haughton, Taylor Fenty, Denise Varner, and Joyce Roland have been friends since high school. The novel tackles relevant and modern social issues such as sexuality, dating, and Afrocentric culture while exploring the difference between friendships and romantic relationships through each of their four very different, individual perspectives. While also providing a strong male point of view from the ladies romantic interests.

Slyce: How did you come up with this title?

MM: At first, the book was called Taboo but over the years as the story grew it became more about these four ladies and the relationship they have with each other as (girlfriends) and with the men they want to be with.

Slyce: In what city does this story take place?

MM: This story is set in Atlanta. It’s funny because at the last minute I decided to add the subtitle “An Atlanta Tale”. Because the story is so rooted in this city it just felt right to put it in the title.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

MM: This book is a standalone story. Although I always leave the door open for a sequel.

Slyce: How long did it take you to complete this project?

MM: Wow… my first draft of this book was written back in 2004. It was a short story back then. Years later, 2015 I expanded it into a full-length novel. So really I’ve been working on this book for about 14 years LOL…

Slyce: Can you name other books you have written?

MM: The books I’m best known for is the Pink Palace series. But my previous book before this was an action thriller called, A Dangerous Woman. I’ve also written other books, From Vixen 2 Diva, Born Sinners, and Used To Temporary Happiness.

Slyce: Name two of the main characters

MM: Rashida is the lead character of the story. She is an Afrocentric type of girl with ties to Jamaica and the United Kingdom due to her parents. She’s also the mother figure of the group. Joyce out of all the girls is the closest to Rashida. She a very classy and traditional type of girl who believes that dating should lead to marriage and family. They have a great bond with each other and the events of this story test those bonds.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

MM: My brand is being diverse and producing quality work in any genre I choose to write in. I love romance, action, sci-fi, and thrillers and I want my readers to feel like they are getting my best work every time out.

Slyce: What advice can you offer those aspiring to become an author?

MM: Start writing right now. Right now. Don’t worry about if you’re doing it right just write it, type it, or whatever. Get it out your head and on paper. Worry about the other stuff later. And have fun doing it!

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Marlon Mccaulsky?

MM: Always LOL… my next book should be coming out in 2019 called, My Current Situation. It’s a Romcom (romantic comedy) that I’m having fun writing.

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?

MM: I write for the passion in hopes that it turns a profit LOL…

Slyce: What motivates you to write?

MM: Funny conversations with my friends. Music sometimes sparks a good idea. Or a good movie. As long as I’m excited about the subject matter I can write about it.

Slyce: What was one of the biggest mistakes you’ve made as a new author?

MM: Believing that I was gonna to follow the same footsteps of the authors that came before me. I was apart of Triple Crown Publications, and I thought after seeing K’wan, Tracy Brown, and Deja King move on to bigger publishers it was going to happen for me too. Just like that LOL… I soon realized that every author’s path is different and it’s been a lot more enjoyable experience for me since. Also, a big mistake was dealing with the CEO of TCP. She was a crook LOL…

Slyce: Do you feel a new author should have a team?

MM: I don’t feel they need a team. Sometimes it’s good to be independent and make smart decisions for yourself without somebody else giving you bad advice or looking out only for themselves. On the flip side, it doesn’t hurt to have a good team around you to help you get the most out of your book. Marketing, promotion, and business advice. The key is having everybody on the same page. So it’s really up to that author what scenario works best for them.

Slyce: Do you have any plans for expansion into films?

MM: I’m already doing independent films with Creative Genius Films. Lamont Gant and I hooked up in 2012 and produced our first film based off of a book I wrote called, Used To Temporary Happiness. Since then, we’ve been making films. Our last film, called Returned was picked up and distributed by GVN/Sony pictures on DVD and streaming services. We’re about to start production on another film in a few days.

Slyce: Is there anything about the industry you’d like to change?

MM: I would like for it to be a little easier for talented authors to get published by major publishers. Or at least be able to get an agent that will actually get your stuff to the right people. It’s almost like playing the lottery to get on. And with the way things are now, I don’t see much changing.

Slyce: What are your thoughts on the .99 cent book?

MM: If you want to give your hard work away for pennies that’s up to you. I will not sell myself that short. If that means I don’t get as many sales then so be it. But I work too hard on each book to settle for less.

Slyce: Where can our viewers purchase your book?

MM: All my books are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and my website.

Slyce: How can our viewers contact you?
