Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our sistah, Author Jill Shawntaye Kapri to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my sistah :-). Are you ready?
Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?
JSK: I started writing poetry first after the death of my father, then I fell in love with reading urban fiction books, especially ones by Wahida Clark and Ashley Antoinette. I knew at that moment that’s what I was destined to do so I started writing my own short stories.
Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?
JSK: I am currently self published so it’s Jill Kapri Presents.
Slyce: In what genre do you write?
JSK: I write in the urban fiction genre.
Slyce: Have you ever penned under another name?
JSK: Yes I have, I started out writing under Shawntaye Shawntaye, Author Shawntaye, then chose Jill Shawntaye Kapri as a final decision.
Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “The System Chose Me”. What was this book about?
JSK: The book tells a story of an innocent 18 year old boy who is falsely accused of killing his best friend at a party the night of his graduation and he’s sentenced to 25 years in prison. The book is a light to the injustice of black men, and how the system fails to fight for them, but instead throws them to the wolves to fight for themselves and in this case that’s exactly what Markez White has to do. Not only fight to prove he is innocent but has to fight against his peers and the officers. He has to learn quickly how to survive in this new life he was forced to accept.
Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?
JSK: As of now it’s a standalone with the possibility of a series.
Slyce: Is this book an audio, eBook and/or paperback?
JSK: The book is not out yet but it will be both an eBook and Paperback.
Slyce: How important are interviews?
JSK: Interviews are important, they play a major role in your brand and expanding your platform, as well as giving your readers the inside scoop to who you are as a person.
Slyce: How important are reviews?
JSK: Me personally, I feel like reviews can either make you or break you if you let them. I love great reviews, but I also learn from the bad ones. I know that in these times not everyone is going to like everything that you present to them and that is okay, continue doing your best and give it 120 at all times despite the reviews.
Slyce: What does the term “Building A Brand” mean?
JSK: To me it means expanding yourself, and showcasing your passion for your business, while building an empire and opportunities for more people like yourself, or your business.
Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?
JSK: I’m learning everything I need to learn first to have a successful brand, while accepting patience, I’m prioritizing my passion, and building the steps to take carefully.
Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?
JSK: I write for passion, I love writing whether it’s a book, in a journal, poems or little notes.
Slyce: What goals do you wish to achieve as an author?
JSK: The thing I want to and will achieve is being a great author and the books that I do write whether it’s fiction, or nonfiction I want my readers to enjoy each project I present to them and truly appreciate them. That means everything to me as well as having upcoming authors look at my path and take my journey as a lesson that they can learn from and know that they can truly do it too once I accomplish that my work is done.

JSK: That’s easy lol, Wahida Clark, Ashley Antoinette and Joy Deja King.
Slyce: What advice can you offer to those aspiring to become authors?
JSK: Always stay consistent, and never give up. Go after your dreams no matter what. Even when it seems like no one hears or see you continue to chase after your dreams.
Slyce: Have you ever done blog talk radio and/or podcast?
JSK: No I haven’t. I do plan to though soon.
