Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our sistah, Author Joyce L. Barnett to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my sistah :-). Are you ready?
Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?
JLB: I have been writing since the age of twelve years old. I have always known that I would be an author. I just didn’t know what genre I would write in until I reached my sixties. Never too late! I published articles during my thirties and up.
Slyce: Have you ever penned under another name?
JLB: No I have not. I like using my birth name. I want my high school friends to know that I did it. Relatives..haters. Lol.
Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?
JLB: Covenant Books of South Carolina.
Slyce: In what genre do you write?
JLB: I write in General Fiction, although my writing has an Urban twist to it. I have done some non-fiction as well when I have written articles.
Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “Rosa’s Big Comeback”. What was this book about?
JLB: This book is about a woman who had it made working in the corporate world, got the infamous “pink slip” one day. She had a tough time getting back on her feet and ended up in a homeless shelter. During this time she never viewed herself as a victim. Instead she used her natural talent as a seamstress and became a stylist for celebrities. Then she became a celebrity with coins herself. I got the idea when I worked as a Life Skills Instructor to homeless women. Now I raise awareness that a homeless person can still dream
Slyce: Is this and eBook and/or paperback
JLB: This book can be purchased both ways. eBook and paperback
Slyce: Is this a stand-alone or a series?
JLB: This is a stand alone, although folks keep telling me to do a series. I have to follow my own gut. I do have plans for Rosa up the road in another format.
Slyce: How important are interviews?
JLB: Personally, I have never ran away from one. I love interviews because they get the word out about your cause. Interviews definitely help authors thrive.
Slyce: How important are reviews?
JLB: Very important, although people have their own views that may differ. I like them because to me they start conversations.
Slyce: What goals do you wish to achieve as an author?
JLB: I want to take my writing..All The..Way. Meaning I want to write something that changes people’s lives and stirs up tremendous conversation.
Slyce: What advice can you offer to those aspiring to become authors?
JLB: It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s work! Many times people look at the glamorous part and naive about the actual blood, sweat, and tears that goes into it. So you must be dedicated! And then you will get the prize if you don’t faint
Slyce: Do you write for passion or profit?
JLB: Definitely for the passion, although I must be real and say that profits are embraced happily.
Slyce: Have you done blog talk radio/podcast?
JLB: I have not for this publication yet. But I will get there. So far I have been interviewed in local print media.
Slyce: What was one of the biggest mistakes you’ve made as a new author?
JLB: Well, actually I had it together for this publication. My rookie years in the nineties is when I made several mistakes. One of them thinking that people in the industry would be hand holders. I learned that even though you need help, it’s the person in the mirror who has to have the vision.
Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Joyce L. Barnett?
JLB: I would like to get more books under my belt. Books with messages about social change.
