Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother, Author Will Brown to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-). Are you ready?
Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?
WB: After being in the music industry as a songwriter, staring into the literary arts really just came natural to me.
Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?
WB: BlakRayn Publishing
Slyce: Have you penned under another name?
WB: No I haven’t, although in the Music Arena everyone knows me as Jay. Needless to say, they were impressed to know that I’m an author as well.
Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “I Surrender”. What was this book about?
WB: “I Surrender” is a story about three women Tanya, Dolores known as Dolores the Diva . Tanya is a Millionaire’s wife whose husband recently cheated on her with her sister’s best friend and now subsequently the results of that adultery was a new baby in addition to Tanya’s new baby and the babies are a month apart. Tanya is now a faithful woman scorned and is giving her husband Drew everything with the kitchen sink. Dolores is the Diva of Divas who’s the flight attendant for an airline and has manipulated Every Man’s will to submit to her sexual desires while emptying their bank accounts. Laura is the saved Christian woman of God holding on to the prophecy that she’s going to meet the man of her dreams who is a pastor of a mega church and of course she’s going to be the first lady. She’s been practicing celibacy for the past 12 years. The story of these three women begin from their college experiences up until the current Womanhood and needless to say the intricate details of their characters will have you on the edge of your seats as they deal with all of the issues that come with life circumstances when dealing with men.
Slyce: In what city does this story take place?
WB: Atlanta!
Slyce: What made you come up with this title?
WB: Well, because of the ideologies, struggles and circumstances that these women experience, ultimately they have to surrender to their own demons. Therefore, I thought the title: “I Surrender” was appropriate.
Slyce: Name two of the main characters.
WB: Well, they’re actually three main characters, Tanya, Delores and Laura.
Slyce: Do you feel a new author should have a team?
WB: That’s a really good question. I have to admit from my own experiences while obtaining the current success that I have been afforded, yes, you need a great photographer, of course the website designer, and a proofreader. A great bonus is someone who’s definitely an English major; just ensure that you’ve gotten all the kinks out of the story line and more importantly a marketing team that really has a niche for social media to enhance your BRAND.
Slyce: What was one of your biggest mistakes as a new author?
WB: Well, I don’t know if I want to call it a mistake. Let’s just say was a bad experience. Sometimes someone that comes highly recommended or a publisher that’s for hire may not be as skilled and or as professional as you’d like. Call work after it’s in a bad attitude or not the best attributes for a successful project. So with that being said I had the experience of working with the publisher who was awful and it was just a horrific experience for a year until I found the right publisher. So I would have to say if there going to be any mistakes do your research and background check on the publisher of your choice.
Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?
WB: No there is a sequel to “I Surrender” which is entitled: “Without Rhyme or Reason”.
Slyce: What authors past and/or present had an influence on you?
WB: Omar Tyree, Zane and Nathan McCall.
Slyce: What are your thoughts on “Author Beef”?
WB: I think it’s a horrible arena. We should be more motivated about supporting each other then trying to defamation each other’s character. If you believe in your gift we all get a chance to shine. That’s why they have shows like the Oscars and the Emmys and the Tony Awards the BET Awards the author’s Awards Etc. to to show off your gifts and skills which at some point doing our journey we all will have the opportunity to share that same experience. It’s all a matter of believing in yourself.
Slyce: Have you done blog talk radio?
WB: Yes, I’ve done Blog Talk Radio with Black Rayne located in North Carolina and also Downtown Radio which is located in Chicago. The shows have been very influential to broadening my customer base and followers.
Slyce: Have you done book signings?
WB: Yes, I’ve been very fortunate to have a vendor at several events around the Atlanta area including Morehouse College, two years consecutively, Hilton Hotel, Black Authors Expose, Papa Palooza Multicultural event, consecutively and as of tomorrow, I’ll be doing Union City Music and Arts Cultures Festival consecutively. As well as, some independent venues.
Slyce: What are your thoughts on the .99 cent book?
WB: I think it’s a great promotional item to promote especially during the holiday seasons.
Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?
WB: Biggest mistake you can ever make is writing for profit. This Niche for writing came so natural for me something that I enjoy, something that I believe I was created to wake up and do everyday. The best feeling in the world is knowing that you’re waking up to life doing what you know you were ordained to do and not to work some dead-end job that is going to make you miserable having someone else to control your entire life. And because I’m a Believer and God’s word, it’s simply says I come that you may have life and life abundantly. Furthermore your gift will make room for you and take you before Great Men. So realizing those factors and knowing what has been placed inside of me with great responsibility, it gives me joy to wake up knowing what I was called to do.
