Meet Author Marlon McCaulsky

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother, Author Marlon McCaulsky to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-). Are you ready?

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?Author Marlon McCaulsky

MM: I’ve been writing for a very long time before I was really serious in becoming an author. But it wasn’t until I took a class on screenplay writing that I got serious. After that, my wife encouraged me on how to turn the screenplays I was writing into novels. After I read a couple of Zane books and Eric Jerome Dickey, I started taking writing seriously.

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

MM: That’s a funny question! Really I’m independent now. Before my last book, I used my initials MLM Publishing Company. So it’s just me myself and I. LOL

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

MM: I try to spread it around and write in different genres. I’ve written Urban lit, Street lit, romance, erotica, SciFi, action-thriller. It’s my goal to try to be as diverse of a writer as I can. It’s almost like I’m challenging myself to grow by taking on different subject matters. Basically, if I feel inspired no matter what the genre, I’m going to try the tackle it.

Slyce: Have you penned under another name?

MM: No. They’re plenty of reasons I know why other authors use a pen name but I choose to do all my work under my name.

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “A Dangerous Woman”. What was this book about?

MM: “A Dangerous Woman” is about an ex-CIA Black Ops agent turned contract killer. As crazy as that narrative may sound, it really is a simple story of choices this character makes given the circumstances around her. since I enjoy films like Jason Bourne, John Wick, Columbiana, I wanted to write an action thriller that use those elements. But it’s really fascinating taking a deep dive into the mind of a character like that and being able to explore her as a person and not just a killer. The fun thing about her is that she has a conscious even though she can be cold-blooded and ruthless when she needs to. It’s a very fun book despite the Grimm nature of the story.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

MM: I haven’t quite made up my mind if it is a stand alone or a series. This particular book definitely has a beginning middle and end to it. But I like to leave the door open in case I like to go back and visit this character and her world.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

MM: Very important. I try to do as many as them as I can. Because at the end of the day readers don’t buy books, they buy the person that writes them. So this is the best way for the readers to get to know me and what my book is about.

Slyce: What does the term, “Building a Brand” mean?

MM: I believe it means building something that the reader can identify you with. Whether that’s a certain genre or the banner that you publish your books under.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

MM: The number one thing that I’m focus on as far as my brand is having high quality stories that are memorable. So when people see my name on a book, they know no matter what genre it may be in, there’s always going to be a certain quality to the story.

Slyce: What goals would you like to achieve as an author?

MM: My number one goal is to tell entertaining stories that people enjoy reading. And a personal goal is to try to be as diverse as possible. I don’t like the idea of being pigeon leg into one genre when there’s so many different things I enjoy.

Slyce: What advice would you like to share with aspiring authors?

MM: Do your research. Determine what kind of stuff you want to write and where does that fit in to the current marketplace. And don’t be afraid to take chances and be different. Also don’t wait, start writing your story now.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Marlon McCaulsky?

MM: I got a couple of other things in the oven LOL… both book and film wise, you’ll hear more about them in 2018.

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?

MM: LOL… well at this point is certainly not for the profit. But let’s be honest, we all want to make money from writing our books. But if that’s your only goal, you may be in the wrong business. If you don’t have a passion for it, you will burn out quickly. And honest truth is that there is only a small percentage of authors who sole source of income is from publishing. Especially in the African American literature. I continue to write because I love telling stories and of course if the opportunity presents itself to make money, I’m going to take it. LOL. But that’s not my only goal.

Slyce: Name three authors you’d love to work with.

MM: Eric Jerome Dickey, Joy Deja King and Tracy Brown.

Slyce: Please explain novels, novella, and anthologies?

MM: Novels are of course full length usually 60000 words or more.

Novellas to my understanding a short story 20k or 30k words.

Anthologies are collection of short stories usually with one theme collected in a book.
