Meet Author Honey

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our sistah, Author Honey to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my sistah :-). Are you ready?

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?Author Honey

Honey: If my mom had been allowed to participate in this interview, she would rush to say that I’ve been a storyteller since the moment I said my first words. But seriously, I have always had a very vivid imagination since as far back as I can remember. At the age of 8, when I was a third grader at Joseph Clisby Elementary School in my hometown of Macon, Georgia, my teacher, Ms. Anne Maria Domingos challenged us to write stories, which she turned into the cutest little books. Before hand, she taught us about plot building, character development, dialogue, themes, and all of the other important elements of writing/storytelling. Evidently, I did a good job on my 3 books because she told my parents that I was destined to be an author. After that, I wrote more stories, poems, skits, and essays over the years. However, I did not attempt to write professionally until after college and retirement from my career as a social worker.

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

Honey: I write for Jessica Watkins Publishing House out of Chicago, Illinois.

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

Honey: I write urban contemporary, African-American romance, and African-American erotic romance for JWP.

Slyce: Have you penned under another name?

Honey: Yes, I have. In fact, I currently write under 3 different names for 3 different publishing houses in 3 different genres!!! LOL

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “A Gentleman’s Lady And A Bad Boy’s Bitch”. What was this book about?

Honey: It’s an urban contemporary story; a family saga, actually. It’s a tale of a pair of male cousins, Ego and Chief, who were raised in a very religious and successful family. They are closer than brothers. They are business partners in a family business and best friends. However, they allow a WOMAN, the one thing their uncle and mentor warned them to never allow to come between them, to tear them apart. It’s dramatic, explosive, erotic, and heart-wrenching.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

Honey: It’s a standalone. However, I feel a book 2 in my spirit although the ending was quite conclusive.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

Honey: Interviews can be effective, but ONLY if the distribution is wide. If not, it does very little to promote an authors work.

Slyce: How important are reviews?

Honey: Reviews are MAJOR!!! They help sell the book. Readers seriously need to understand how much authors depend on reviews. If you enjoy a book, it is imperative that you let the author know as well as other readers. Readers trust other readers to recommend good books worth their time and money. And on the flip side, if a book sucks, readers trust other readers to warn them not to waste their hard-earned money or time on a piece of crap.

Slyce: What does the term, “Building a Brand” mean?

Honey: Brand building means distinguishing yourself from the pack. It requires uniqueness on sight. A logo, a motto, a strong special dialect, a social media presence… Everything should be exclusive to you, the artist.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

Honey: I am the BOOK TRAILER AUTHOR! I am the only author who releases an incredible book trailer to promote EVERY BOOK I release. That sets me apart. Everyone releases a book cover and an excerpt, but I release a 90-second trailer produced by the BEST. Sabrina Diamond Lewis of Diamond Life Voiceovers and Productions is the BOOK TRAILER QUEEN hands down!!! Nobody can bring your book to life like she can.

Slyce: What goals would you like to achieve as an author?

Honey: I want my books to be converted into movies and stage plays.

Slyce: What advice would you like to share with aspiring authors?

Honey: I encourage those who wish to write to study the craft by analyzing accomplished authors. Take creative writing courses online or at your local community college.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Honey?

Honey: I have a few projects in play. Expect something from me in mid springtime.

Slyce: Do you write for the passion or the profit?

Honey: I write for passion and profit. I write EVERY DAY because it is my passion. And my passion turns a decent profit. 🙂

Slyce: What does the phrase, “Learn The Craft” mean?

Honey: The CRAFT entails the very basics of writing and storytelling. It’s two-fold. I am a fulltime editor, so I come across people who can tell a great story, but can’t write worth a damn! It baffles me. I cringe at poor sentence structure, the lack of character development, horrible pacing, cheesy dialogue, inaccurate content, etc… I don’t get it. I encourage those who wish to write to study the craft by analyzing accomplished authors. Take creative writing courses online or at your local community college.

Slyce: Name three authors you’d love to work with.

Honey: Please don’t think I’m being cocky, but I can’t write with anyone. I’m sorry. I am too big of a control freak to collaborate with anyone. I can be featured in an anthology with other authors, but I can’t see me writing with anyone.
