Meet Author Derek Borne

Slyce: Brothers and Sistah’s, please welcome our brother, Author Derek Borne to “The Interrogation Room”!! Welcome my brother:-). Are you ready?

Slyce: What inspired you to become an author?Author Derek Borne

DB: When I was young, my mom taught me to read big books by the age of 3 / 4. I loooooved stories, and even took over our household tape recorder. I used to take stories I’d read and do my own spin on them. As the years went by, the love of writing grew more and more. When I came home from school, I’d rush to the computer to keep working on my ideas. And here I am today!

Slyce: What is the name of your publishing company?

DB: I’m an indie author, so no big traditional company…yet! As for now, I use the cover name Virtuoso Press.

Slyce: In what genre do you write?

DB: Science fiction is my jam! As for right now, my debut novel is of the superhero/spy variety. So there’s the sci-fi with some humor, and I’ll admit I like writing a bit of romance, mystery/thriller… it’s a little bit of everything, and the rest is classified.

Slyce: Have you penned under another name?

DB: Nope. Derek Borne is my name, and I don’t intend to change it. Plus, I don’t have any stalkers to worry about… yet…

Slyce: You wrote a book titled, “The Ultimate Agent”. What was this book about?

DB: UA is about a classified US based spy organization that has the ability to give operatives superpowers. The reason: a terrorist group can do the same thing. Other than the action, it also touches on questions like “how many superpowers can the human body handle?”, “do powers really make the hero?”, and focuses a fair bit on the relationships of the characters.

Slyce: Do you feel a new author should have a team?

DB: “Family” is the more appropriate term. And yes, definitely. I would be nothing without my family.

Slyce: What was one of your biggest mistakes as a new author?

DB: That would be, setting a release date before my editing was even finished. Everyone kept asking me when it was coming out, so I set a date because I thought I was doing something wrong. So, I ended up extending my release date. Newbie mistake. But I’ve learned from it.

Slyce: Is this book a stand alone or a series?

DB: This is the first installment in the UA series. I’m currently rewriting the sequel, and the third is sitting pretty waiting for me to work on it. It may or may not be the only three in the series… but we’ll see how life goes.

Slyce: How important are interviews?

DB: I feel it’s important for readers to get to know the author, because it’s like getting to know a new member of a bigger family, whether you’ve read the book or not. Plus if people enjoy hearing from the author, then it may bring them closer to seeing what they have to say within their novel. I welcome any questions and requests! (requests within reason, though…)

Slyce: How important are reviews?

DB: Being that this is my debut novel, I’m so floored and honored by the reviews I’ve been receiving so far. So, THANK YOU to everyone who’s reviewed so far! Other than helping others decide on whether they want to read the novel or not, they also give a great boost to the author when they’re having a rough day.

Slyce: What does the term, “Building a Brand” mean?

DB: To me, I’m not just selling a book. A book or characters can only do so much. Branding is about showing people what kind of person you are. If people like you and what you stand for, then great! It’s all about building relationships.

Slyce: What steps are you taking to build your brand?

DB: It takes a lot of work, but it’s been a fun process. Everyday you have to make connections, add more to the friendships you already have. I’d rather people say, “Oh, Derek Borne? He’s a good person” rather than my books be the focus.

Slyce: What goals would you like to achieve as an author?

DB: I don’t expect to make millions. I don’t expect to have UA be turned into a movie. All I want is to make readers feel something, and hopefully give them the best reading experience I can give.

Slyce: What advice would you like to share with aspiring authors?

DB: Other than always write no matter what, be the best person you can be. Make connections. Get outside your comfort zone, and adventure to the unknown! Everything you experience can be used in your writing. So live your life first, and the rest will come.

Slyce: Is there anything else cooking in the lab for Author Derek Borne?

DB: As of right now, I’m 2/3 into rewriting UA 2. It was originally written when I was about 15, so now it’s bringing everything up to how the nearly 30 yr old me would write it. Then soon, I’ll be able to move on to #3.

Slyce: Name three authors you’d love to work with.

DB: Author Frost Kay, M. A. Phipps, and if he was still alive, Michael Crichton.

Slyce: Is your book an eBook and/or paperback?

DB: You can find it on Amazon in both formats!

Slyce: How can our viewers contact you?

DB: Here’s a list of my stalk links:
